Public Opinion Poll: 70% Concerned About Threats to American Democracy, Sharp Divide Between Democrats and Republicans

81% of Democrats “disqualify” vs. 90% of Republicans “retain” 70% of all concerned that “American democracy is under threat”

While a lawsuit is ongoing over whether former U.S. President Donald Trump should be disqualified from the presidential primary in connection with the January 6 storming of the U.S. Capitol, 54% of Americans support retaining his candidacy.

As a result of a public opinion poll conducted by CBS in collaboration with YouGov on 2,157 adult U.S. residents from the 3rd to 5th (local time), 54% of respondents responded that former President Trump should remain a candidate for the primary.

Opinions between Democrats and Republicans were sharply divided. 81% of Democrats said former President Trump’s name should be excluded from the ballot, while 90% of Republicans opposed it.

Former President Trump is being sued in more than 30 states for disqualification from being a presidential candidate for his responsibility for inciting the riot that invaded the Capitol on January 6, 2021.

On the 19th of last month, the Colorado Supreme Court disqualified former President Trump from participating in the Colorado primary, and following Trump’s appeal, the U.S. Supreme Court made the final decision on his eligibility to run as a candidate.

In the opinion poll, 49% of respondents thought that the losing side in the 2024 presidential election would cause riots, while 51% approved of the possibility of a peaceful transfer of power. A total of 70% of respondents said that American democracy is under threat.

A total of 78% of respondents criticized the January 6 incident, while only 22% responded that they supported it. Within the Republican Party, the intensity of criticism has weakened, with the percentage of those who responded ‘strongly criticizing’ dropping significantly from 51% to 32%.

37% of Republicans supported the conspiracy theory that most of those who entered the Capitol were disguised as supporters of former President Trump. Only 12% of Republicans responded that they were typical Trump supporters.

At the time, 54% of Democrats and 31% of Republicans responded that public authorities, including the police, tried to prevent protests. 20% of Republicans said the police encouraged the protests.

While former President Trump argued that those involved in the January 6 attacks should be pardoned, 66% of Republicans supported this proposal.
