US Secretary of State Blinken warns of threat to wider Middle East in Israel-Palestine conflict

US Secretary of State Blinken warned today thatIsraelandPalestineIslamic radical movementHamasThe war in Gaza threatens to “transfer” and pose a threat to the security of the wider Middle East, stressing that the displaced Palestinians must not be forced to leave Gaza.

Agence France-Presse reported that Antony Blinken, who returned to the Middle East as the conflict between Israel and Hamas escalated, held a press conference in Qatar and said: “This is a moment of extreme tension in the region, and this conflict can easily transfer, causing greater insecurity and more suffering.”

He also called the attack on the Gaza Strip that killed two Al Jazeera journalists an “unimaginable tragedy.”

Qatar’s Al Jazeera TV station announced earlier that Hansa. Hamza Dahdouh and Mustafa Thuria were killed “on the way” in the Gaza Strip “on their mission” for Al Jazeera. Turia is also a staff photojournalist for AFP and other news agencies.

“This is an unimaginable tragedy, and so are too many innocent Palestinian men, women and children,” Blinken said of the deaths of the two journalists.

Blinken said Israel must do more to protect civilians in Gaza and stressed the need to allow Palestinians displaced by the ongoing war to “go home.”

“Palestinian civilians must be able to return home as soon as the situation allows,” he said at a press conference with Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed Bin Abdulrahman al-Thani. “They cannot and must not allow them to be forced to leave Gaza.”
