Israel Fernandez and Rocio Marquez, king and queen of flamenco, in Nîmes

Popular with flamenco aficionados, who sometimes come from far away to feed their laudable addiction, the festival organized by the Théâtre de Nîmes invites, on January 11, for its 34th edition, the captivating cantaor Israel Fernandez (also 34 years old), accompanied by the excellent guitarist Diego del Morao, then receives, on the 13th, at Paloma, the creative Andalusian singer Rocio Marquez, associated with Bronquio (Santiago Gonzalo), DJ producer and electronic musician from Jerez de la Frontera.

Born in Corral de Almaguer, a small town near Toledo, in central Spain, from a gypsy family, Israel Fernandez was exposed to flamenco. He made it his life, devoted several albums to it, including Shepherd Universe (2018), a tribute to the immense singer Pastora Pavón, known as “La Niña de los Peines” (1890-1969) and Pura Sangre (2023), his most recent, recorded with Diego del Morao, faithful accomplice.

If Israel Fernandez comes to Nîmes for the first time, Rocio Marquez, on the other hand, is a regular at this festival. This year she presents her latest creation, created in the company of Bronquio, the enigmatic electronic flamenco exercise Third heaven, published in 2022 (Viavox).

In addition to other eminent representatives of cante (Jesus Mendez) and confident guitar talents (Gerardo Nuñez), the Nîmes Flamenco Festival also welcomes big names in dance (including this year Olga Pericet and Daniel Abreu, Lucia Alvarez ” La Piñona”, Maria Moreno, Paula Comitre and Patricia Guerrero).
