Dubai Hospitality Sector Sees 24.5% Spike in New Hotel Rooms, Adds 102 Hotels

Dubai has witnessed a boom in the hospitality sector, confirming its firm commitment to diversification to meet the various preferences and budgets of all types of local and international visitors and tourists, adding about 29,000 new hotel rooms over nearly 4 years between September 2019 and October 2023.

The strong growth, which represents a 24.5% increase in the number of new hotel rooms, reflects the extent of the sector’s expansion and development during these years, which were marked by great challenges due to “Covid-19”, driven by the addition of 102 new hotels, with a 14.2% increase in the number of establishments.

According to data from the Department of Economy and Tourism, the number of hotel establishments increased to 818 establishments at the end of October 2023, compared to 716 at the end of September 2019, and the number of hotel rooms increased to more than 149 thousand rooms compared to approximately 119.8 thousand rooms.

The influx of new hotel rooms is expected to have a positive impact on the tourism scene in Dubai. Dubai remains a vital destination for luxury travel, as the number of 5-star hotel establishments has increased by 30%, with the addition of 36 luxury hotels in 4 years, bringing the total number to 156 5-star hotels by the end of October 2023, adding 10,498 luxury hotel rooms. New, bringing the total to 51,282 5-star hotel rooms by the end of October 2023.

As for premium hotel apartments, their number increased by 23.5%, adding 16 establishments, bringing the total number to 84 establishments. Then the number of apartment units increased by 32.1%, adding 3,301 new units, bringing their number to 13,573 units by the end of October 2023.

The tourism sector in Dubai recorded a jump in new hotel openings of 4-star establishments during the past four years, in the context of providing a diverse segment of the hotel supply in the city. Al Khaleej’s monitoring showed a growth in the number of 4-star hotels by 26% during the period between October 2019 and October 2023, an increase of 39 hotels, bringing the total number to 189 hotels.

The number of hotel rooms in the 4-star category also increased by 37.9%, equivalent to 11,645 hotel rooms, to reach 42,389 hotel rooms by the end of October 2023.

  • Budget hotels

As part of enhancing the supply of the economic hotel segment, the number of hotels from the category of one star to 3 stars increased by 9.4%, equivalent to 24 hotels, to reach 278 hotels, and the number of rooms in the same category increased by 23.3%, equivalent to 5529 rooms, to reach 278 hotels. The total by the end of October 2023 reached 29,254 rooms.

Regular hotel apartment establishments recorded the only decline among the various categories of hotel supply, by 10.5% in the number of establishments to 111 establishments, with a decline of 11.8% in the number of apartments to 12,578 apartments.
