The top Turkish football club Besiktas Istanbul has hired the Portuguese Fernando Santos as their new head coach. The club announced this on Sunday. Besiktas did not provide any information about the term of the contract. Santos succeeds Riza Calimbay, who was released at the end of December.
Santos had most recently coached the Polish national team, but was fired there during the ongoing European Championship qualifiers. He previously coached Portugal for eight years and led the team around superstar Cristiano Ronaldo to the first European Championship title in the country’s history in 2016.
Santos is already the fourth coach for Besiktas this season. Before Calimbay, Senol Günes and Burak Yilmaz had already been on the sidelines. In the Süper Lig, after 18 games, Besiktas is in sixth place, 19 points behind city rivals Fenerbahce and Galatasaray at the top of the table.
