True Detective: Exploring the Gritty Murders and Complex Characters of HBO’s Fourth Series

True Detective (HBO, 4th series)

Series 1: In 1995, a brutal murder of a prostitute took place in Louisiana. This was probably committed by a serial killer with occult leanings. Now we return to the case through the interviews of two detectives at the time. They are Martin Hart and Rustin Cohle. Through the interrogations, in addition to the details of the case, their strained relationship is now coming to the surface. Hart is a Louisiana native and family man whose marriage is crumbling under the weight of work stress and infidelity. He is, at least on the surface, the opposite of Cohle, a pessimistic loner and former Texas narcotics detective.

Matthew
McConaughey (Rustin Cohle) a Woody Harrelson
(Martin Hart).

Season 2: A bizarre murder brings together three law enforcement officers and one career criminal as they unravel a web of conspiracy and betrayal, all against the backdrop of California. Ray Velcoro is an endangered detective who lives in the industrial city of Vinci. Frank Semyon, a criminal entrepreneur, must face danger in the form of the loss of his life’s work, which is further complicated by his wife and closest ally. Ani Bezzerides is a detective in Ventura County who occasionally has minor disagreements with the system she serves. The last of the four is war veteran Paul Woodrugh, who now works for the California Highway Patrol. It is he who discovers the scene of the crime, which starts the entire investigation of another dark case.

Colin Farrell
(Ray Velcoro), Vince
Vaughn (Frank Semyon), Rachel McAdams
(Ani Bezzeridesová) a Taylor Kitsch (Paul
Woodrugh).

Series 3: Retired detective Wayne Hays, who has been haunted by the disappearance of a twelve-year-old boy and his ten-year-old sister in the Arkansas town of West Finger for thirty-five years. As the aging Hays, whose memory is beginning to fail, goes over the details of his investigation with the producer of this true-crime documentary, we are given a glimpse not only of the case, but also of Hays’ past. We follow events in 1980, when the murder took place, and in 1990, when a shocking discovery rekindled interest in this terrifying case. Each of the eight episodes uncovers another piece of the puzzle of what happened on that fateful night in 1980, while revealing how the event affected so many people’s lives.

Mahershala Ali
(Wayne Hays), Stephen Dorff
