Rare Phenomenon in Oslo: Meteorologist Explains Unprecedented Light in the Sky

If you were out in Oslo on Sunday morning, you might have seen a very special light in the sky. Now the meteorologist explains the rare phenomenon.

It was Oslo newspaper who mentioned the matter first.

– Quite special

Mari Tørset and her husband got a bit of a vision when they got up on Sunday morning. From the veranda they caught sight of a very special light.

– We have a pretty good view out towards the Oslo Fjord, so we are used to seeing nice colors and nice light. But exactly that we have never seen before, Tørset tells Dagbladet.

Tørset says that it all looked like a rainbow, but that it stood straight up and down like a pillar.

– It was a kind of cloud with clear lights on each side. It was quite special, with very clear, nice colours, she continues.

Tønset says that the phenomenon persisted for a few hours during the day on Sunday, before the colors gradually faded into the afternoon.

– It was really very nice, she says.

Rare sight

On-duty meteorologist Martin Granerud has discussed the phenomenon with his colleagues at the Meteorological Institute. He says that he has never seen anything like it either.

– In many ways, this can be considered bisol, which is an optical phenomenon that comes from sunlight being reflected due to ice crystals. But here it is probably so cold that it could be due to ice crystals in the low clouds, Granerud tells Avisa Oslo.

According to the meteorologist, the phenomenon is very rare to see.

– Bisol itself is not that rare, but usually this is something we see high up in the atmosphere. What is special and funny here is that it originates from the cloud layer quite close to the ground. I don’t think I’ve seen that before, he tells the newspaper.

– It’s a stylish picture, he adds.
