Preventing Tooth Decay and Diseases: Proper Tooth Brushing Techniques and Timings

Brushing your teeth properly and daily is the most important way to maintain cleanliness of your mouth and teeth and prevent tooth decay and the diseases that result from it.

The correct use of the brush is associated with the timing in which teeth are brushed, as choosing the wrong timing can lead to problems and damage to the mouth and teeth.

Wrong timings

Dentists advise avoiding cleaning the mouth with brushes and paste, and warn against using the toothbrush directly after eating, or after vomiting, as this can destroy the tooth pulp known as enamel.

According to the Mayo Clinic Medical Organization, the mouth becomes acidic immediately after eating, or after vomiting, and brushing the mouth in this case distributes the acid to the teeth and allows it to dissolve their surface, which is the first stage of decay, which ends with the tooth enamel being damaged and then being removed.

It is recommended to wait at least an hour after eating to brush your teeth

The best way to clean teeth

The Saudi Ministry of Health provides a number of steps to properly clean teeth:

• Place the brush on the teeth at a 45 degree angle, so that the brush bristles touch the tip of the gums and teeth.
• Brush every 2 or 3 teeth together gently back and forth from the gum side to the end of the tooth, and so on for the rest of the teeth.
• Clean the back teeth (molars) by placing the brush at a 45-degree angle, back and forth, in a circular motion on all internal surfaces.
• Clean the inner side of the teeth using the brush head, moving the brush longitudinally up and down.
• Clean the edges of the teeth, then clean the tongue using its brush or a toothbrush.
