With Edson Álvarez on the field, West Ham drew 1-1 against Bristol City in the Third Round of the FA Cup and will have to play the replay to qualify for the Fourth Round, which is equivalent to the Round of 32.
The Mexican midfielder started the match as a starter and came off as a substitute in the 75th minute after being controversially cautioned in stoppage time of the first half.
El Machín was covering the ball against three Bristol players when one of them, who was already on the grass, tried to throw it, getting one of his legs stuck. The Mexican tried to get away and the referee perceived it as an attack and showed him the yellow card.
West Ham opened the scoring quickly with a great goal. Lucas Paquetá sent a magnificent pass almost from midfield to the area where Jarrod Bowen appeared and took off the goalkeeper to send the ball into the back of the net in the 4th minute.
Unfortunately the Hammers suffered two injuries in the first half. Paquetá came on as a substitute in the 14th minute for Divin Mubama and Konstantinos Mavropanos in the 39th minute for Angelo Ogbonna.
Although David Moyes’ team was better throughout the match, Bristol City managed to equalize the score in the 61st minute via Tommy Conway.
West Ham will return to Premier League activity until Sunday, January 21 when they visit Sheffield United. The Hammers are in sixth place in the table with 34 points, five away from European places.
