By defeating Hurkacz 6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (8-6), 6-4, Zverev, ranked seventh in the world, revived his country’s hopes of winning the cup by forcing a 1-1 draw, after Poland advanced 1-0 thanks to Iga Szwijntic, who crushed Angelique. Kerber 6-3, 6-0.
Zverev returned to the court to play against Laura Siegmund in the decisive doubles match, which ended in favor of the German duo at the expense of Szwijntek and Hurkacz 6-4, 5-7, 10-4.
“It was a matter of millimeters today for you guys (Poland) to become champions,” Zverev said during the trophy ceremony.
The 26-year-old continued, “For my team, it was great and very enjoyable. I couldn’t be happier.”
This is the first confrontation between Hurkacz and Zverev since the final of the ATP Championship in 2021, when the German was crowned champion.
Zverev added, “I was exhausted” after the semi-final match ended on Sunday morning, and “In the middle of the second set, I was exhausted, and in the third set, I held on for a long time and somehow got a break.”
The German stressed that the competitions were “difficult on both the mental and physical levels, because playing for three consecutive days in singles and mixed events is very difficult.”
