There’s nothing sadder than completely breaking down after a delicious meal. Instead of gaining energy, you end up in a huge one after dinner dip. Oh no! There’s nothing wrong with a nice nap after dinner, but you’re not always looking forward to it. What are the causes of this special phenomenon, and more importantly: how do you prevent it?
Causes
Colloquially we call it a after dinner dip of food coma, but the scientific term for choking after eating is postprandial hypotension. This usually occurs after dinner, but can also occur after lunch. Annoying! Of after dinner dip, or whatever you want to call it, can have several causes. For example, consider how much you eat, what you eat and your digestion.
After eating a meal, your brain produces orexin neurons. Neuro who!? Well: these substances reduce your brain activity, making you feel tired. During digestion you produce more insulin, which in turn increases melatonin levels. And as you may already know: melatonin is the sleep hormone.
Then there are amino acids in certain foods that stimulate the production of serotonin in the brain. This in turn increases the melatonin level, making you sleepy. These amino acids are mainly found in protein sources, such as milk, salmon, eggs and chicken. Meals high in carbohydrates and sugars also ensure that more melatonin is produced. Finally, the size of your portions affects how you feel after a meal. In general, the more you eat, the more tired you become.
Prevent
If you want to avoid falling asleep like a log after eating your dinner, there are a number of things you can take into account. For example, you can try not to eat too large portions and avoid meals with a lot of carbohydrates. In addition, it works well to drink water after your meal. This way your body stays hydrated and you get tired less quickly. Ah!
