Shashi Tharoor clarifies intent of temple visit amid Karnataka government’s order for special pujas

Kollam: Congress leader and MP Shashi Tharoor said that he goes to the temple to pray and not for a political function. He clarified that individuals have been invited to Ayodhya and they will take a decision regarding participation. He was replying to a media query regarding the Karnataka government’s order to conduct special pujas in temples on Ram Temple Pratishtha Day in Ayodhya.

“Individuals are invited. Individuals decide. I go to the temple to pray. Not going to a political function. There may be a cultural conference on the side for that. There may be a hall. According to me, going to the temple is for a different purpose. It is going to establish a relationship with God. I don’t know if government intervention is needed. But if they did, so be it. People pray because of their own interest. Tharoor said that no one is going to pray because the government has told them to.

Asked whether the party’s decision on attending the dedication ceremony in Ayodhya would be made soon, he replied, ‘There is still a day for the 22nd’. The consecration ceremony in Ayodhya is on January 22.
