Batu City, Bhirawa.
A total of 292 service posts have been prepared by the Batu City Government to welcome National Immunization Week (PIN) in the middle of this month. The number of PIN Posts is to optimize immunization to prevent children in Batu City from contracting polio. There are at least 24,677 children targeted for polio immunization.
“We must work together so that no children in Batu City are affected by the polio virus. “Because until now there is no cure for polio,” said Dr Susana Indahwati, Head of Disease Prevention and Control at the Batu City Health Office when confirmed, Sunday (7/1).
He explained that the estimated target for polio immunization in Batu City is children aged 0-8 years or less 1 day. And in Batu City, there are 24,677 children at this vulnerable age.
And to optimize service, 292 PIN Posts will be prepared. Apart from being held at community health centers, PIN Posts will also be provided at posyandu, elementary schools (SD), and Madrasah Ibtidaiyah (MI). By optimizing this PIN, it is hoped that it can prevent children from contracting paralysis.
Susana explained that polio is a disease that can be prevented by immunization. Polio virus can be transmitted through water contaminated with feces containing Polio virus.
There are several risk factors for transmission of the Polio virus. Namely, low coverage of Polio Immunization, environmental hygiene conditions and poor clean living behavior. These include open defecation, whether in rivers or water sources which are also used in everyday life.
If the Polio Virus enters the body of a child who has not received polio immunization or whose polio immunization is incomplete, the virus will reproduce very easily. Usually this virus develops in the digestive tract and attacks the child’s nervous system, causing paralysis.
To overcome and stop the transmission of the polio virus, the Batu City Health Office invites the public to play an active role in carrying out prevention efforts. Among other things, the community must ensure that their children receive complete routine polio immunization according to age, namely 4 polio drops and 2 polio injections.
“And complete polio vaccination must be done before the age of 1 year,” explained Susana.
Then residents must also ensure that all children aged 0 – 7 years in the entire Batu City area receive 2 additional doses of polio immunization drops. And this can be obtained at the National Immunization Sub Week (Sub PIN) activities which will be held starting January 15 2024.
And what is no less important is implementing clean and healthy living habits, including defecating in a latrine with a septic tank, and washing hands with soap before eating and after defecating.
“Apart from that, the public is also advised to immediately report to the nearest health officer or community health center if they find a child under 15 years old with symptoms of sudden paralysis,” added Susana.
It is known that the Directorate General of Disease Prevention and Control (P2P) of the Indonesian Ministry of Health has received reports of the discovery of three cases of acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) caused by Type Two Polio Virus. Two cases were discovered in the provinces of Central Java and East Java in December 2023. Another case was found in East Java on January 4 2024.
Reporting from the Director General of Disease Prevention and Control, in December 2023 two cases of acute paralysis caused by the polio virus were discovered with different case chronologies. One case had incomplete polio immunization, another had complete immunization status but was malnourished. (nas.gat)
