Seoul Power Outages and Cold Wave Causes Chaos Across the Country

Today, amidst the bitter cold with temperatures across the country below freezing, power outages and accidents continued to occur throughout the country.

As the temperature dropped significantly overnight, the commute to work tomorrow morning will be colder than today due to the harsh wind.

At around 1 p.m. today, electricity supply was cut off for about an hour to 900 households, including houses and commercial buildings, in Hwagok-dong, Gangseo-gu, Seoul.

″All the boilers are turned off and payments to stores like this are not made, so everything is canceled… Because it was lunch time, I couldn’t eat anything… ″

Five cases of people getting trapped in elevators were reported, and the fire department carried out rescue operations.

KEPCO explained that power was cut off when a tree branch touched a high-voltage line.

Earlier, at about 3:30 a.m., electricity supply to about 700 households in Hongeun-dong, Seodaemun-gu, Seoul was cut off for three to five hours at most.

″The power outage occurred because there was a problem with the switchgear in the equipment that supplies electricity to the customer. If a problem occurs at one customer and an abnormal airflow occurs on the line, a power outage occurs in each area… ″

At a ski resort in Pyeongchang-gun, Gangwon-do, a gondola stopped around 10:30 this morning.

64 passengers were trapped in the gondola for about 30 minutes while the gondola belt malfunction was being repaired, but there were no casualties.

Around noon, a man in his 50s suffered from dizziness while climbing Mt. Taebaek, and a man in his 80s suffered injuries after falling and were rescued by fire authorities.

From 9 PM tonight, a cold wave advisory will be in effect for the inland areas, including northern Gyeonggi Province, Gangwon Province, Chungcheong Province, Jeolla Province, and parts of Gyeongsang Province.

Tomorrow morning’s temperature will drop even further than today, falling below -10 degrees in some areas, including the central region, including Seoul.

The Korea Meteorological Administration predicts that the temperature will rise again starting tomorrow and the temperature the day after tomorrow will be similar to normal.
