Snow weather (what’s in a name?) asks for a steaming cup of soup. It makes us warm inside, literally and figuratively. With these 10 ingredients you’ll be perfect on fire of your soup. Because that makes it not tasty, but insanely delicious!

Do you remember those crispy soup balls? And do you also have a bottle of Maggi somewhere in the back of your kitchen cupboard? That was really tasty in your soup, I’ll admit it right away. But not the most culinary decision you’ve ever made in your life. The ingredients below will turn your bowl of soup into a culinary tour de force. A title he deserves, right?

Roasted garlic

I bet you make your soup by first frying an onion and garlic. Hey, you can make a lot of profit there. First roast your garlic in the oven. This makes it soft and sweet, and that gives a fantastic taste to your soup. Moreover, the sharpness is removed without completely losing the garlic flavor. I don’t do it any other way anymore.

Seeds, kernels and grains

Lemon really gives your soup a sour boost, orange also adds something sweet. The latter is delicious in carrot or pumpkin soup, for example. If you want the lemon, lime or orange flavor to be extra intense, go for the zest. (With you all time favorite Microplane of course.)

Popcorn

Anyone who thought that popcorn can only be eaten from a bucket at the movies is wrong. The popped corn kernels can also be added to your soup. Because why not? They give your soup more filling and flavor. The latter, especially if you season them in advance, with Italian herbs for example. Obviously, salty popcorn is preferred. But if you want to experiment with something sweet (dropcorn perhaps?): definitely do it. Brilliant things often happen at the most unlikely moments.

Beer or wine

We have known for a long time that we no longer just drink beer and wine. From beer bitterballen to pasta dough with red wine, we have seen it all. So why not in your soup? Beer, for example, works well in soups with meat and mushrooms. A dash of (red) wine, on the other hand, is fantastic in a bowl of onion soup.

Ginger

Could your soup use some pepper in its ass? Then go for… ginger. Preferably fresh ginger, which has the most intense and rich taste. But a generous pinch of ginger powder is also possible. For a piece of fresh ginger you can take the Microplane out of the drawer again. You can also roughly chop the ginger root, after which you let the pieces soak in the broth. Ginger is especially a nice seasoning in sweeter soups, such as carrot soup, pumpkin soup and sweet potato soup.

A super tip that is also very budget-friendly: soak a piece of shank or marrow bone in your stock. It gives your soup a more intense, deeper flavor. The butcher around the corner undoubtedly has them lying around. Sometimes you even get them for free, because they are actually residual products. Win win!

I want cheese – also in my soup. Or on soup, as a kind of topping. The gratinated cheese on onion soup is of course a classic. But you can experiment with cheese and soup a lot more than you think.
