OpenAI CEO Calls for Support for Muslim Community in Tech Industry Amid Israeli-Palestinian Conflict

Jakarta

Israeli-Palestinian conflict also has an impact on the Muslim and Arab communities in the field of technology. In this case, CEO OpenAI, Sam Altman felt that many in the Muslim tech community did not feel comfortable sharing their experiences.

Altman saw that many Muslim and Arab communities, especially Palestinians, in the technology community were afraid of damaging their career prospects. Altman expressed this on his personal X account @sama, Friday (05/01/2024).

“Muslim and Arab (especially Palestinian) colleagues in the tech community I spoke to felt uncomfortable sharing their recent experiences, often for fear of retaliation and damage to career prospects,” Altman wrote.

He also explained that the technology industry really supports Muslim colleagues even though he thinks the current situation is quite dire. Altman hopes that peace will be achieved soon and that everyone in the tech community will treat each other well.

“Our industry must unite in support of these colleagues, these are terrible times. I continue to hope for real and lasting peace, and in the meantime we can treat each other with empathy,” he continued Altman in his tweet.

An account with the name @Dermo*** commented by asking Altman’s attitude regarding the antisemitism movement in the Jewish community. Altman responded that he himself was Jewish and that antisemitism was a problem.

Even so, Altman feels he has received a lot of support regarding this matter. In fact, Altman sees that there is still very little such support for the Muslim community.

“I’m Jewish. I believe that antisemitism is a significant and growing problem in the world, and I see a lot of people in the industry supporting me, and I really appreciate that. I see less of that in Muslims,” replied Altman.

In the United States, antisemitism and Islamophobia have increased since the first days of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Even the Council on American-Islamic Relations stated that biased views towards Palestinians and Arabs increased by 172% in the US as reported by Reuters.
