In the Pas-de-Calais department, plagued by flooding, the decline continues on the Aa, the Lys and the Canche, but the soils are so saturated with water that nothing seems to be changing.
On the morning of January 6 again, the water of the Canche covered the streets of Calotterie (Pas-de-Calais). A resident comes to see the damage at his mother’s house. He and his cousin have to walk 500 meters, knee-deep in water. The house had already been flooded in November and then cleaned. It had taken weeks to dry it completely. An unbearable wait that is repeated today. “It’s a very slow decline, the rise is rapid, but the decline takes a few weeks or even more than a month. It’s stressful because what’s the future? It’s the unknown”asks Frédéric Lecam, affected.
Pumps to accelerate the decline
Gérard Sailly, resident of La Calotterie (Pas-de-Calais), remains pessimistic. “There, it dropped last night by 5 centimetersit’s always encouraging but how long will it take to go down?”, the citizen asks. The inhabitants can only scrutinize the evolution of the recession. To speed up the evacuation, several residents have installed pumps in their homes, but it will take time. In some places, the water left by the November flood had not even receded before the flood. The rain stopped but on Friday January 5, new precipitation slowed the decline of the Canche.
