(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Kwon Soo-hyun = In the United States, a Boeing 737 Max passenger plane made an emergency landing immediately after takeoff due to a pressure problem.
Fortunately, there were no casualties, but the passengers said, “I thought I was going to die,” as they saw a large hole in the side of the fuselage in the air.
According to AP, AFP, Reuters, the New York Times (NYT), and CNN on the 6th (local time), Alaska Airlines Flight 1282, a Boeing 737 Max 9 airliner that took off from Portland International Airport in Oregon at around 5 p.m. the previous day, turned around immediately after takeoff. Made an emergency landing.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said the plane “drew safely after the crew reported pressure problems.”
Alaska Airlines also issued a statement, saying the plane, which was carrying a total of 177 people, including 171 passengers and 6 crew members, “landed safely” at Portland Airport.
This airliner returned with a large hole in the air as part of the side of the fuselage was torn off.
“It was really sudden. As soon as we got to altitude (the flight), the windows and walls blew out,” passenger Kyle Linker told CNN.
Another passenger, Vi Nguyen (22), said, “I fell asleep and woke up to a loud noise. When I opened my eyes, I saw an oxygen mask in front of me. When I looked to the left, the side wall of the plane had disappeared. The first thing I thought was, ‘I’m going to die.’ “I thought,” I looked back.
His friend Elisabeth Le (20) also said, “I heard a very loud popping sound,” and when she looked up, she saw a hole in the wall of the plane two to three rows away.
Fortunately, the window seat right next to the hole was empty, but a teenage boy and his mother were sitting in the middle and aisle seats.
Passengers reported that the boy’s shirt flew out of the plane when a hole was made in the fuselage, and that flight attendants soon escorted the boy’s hat to another seat on the other side.
Immediately after landing, paramedics entered the plane and identified the injured. It was reported that a man sitting in the row behind the hole had injured his foot. The Alaska Airlines branch of the cabin crew union said that one flight attendant also suffered minor injuries.

According to flight information site FlightAware, the plane departed from Portland Airport for Ontario International Airport at 5:07 p.m. on the 5th, turned back to Portland Airport six minutes later and landed at 5:27.
It rose to an altitude of 16,000 feet (4,876m) before returning, and its top speed was recorded at 440 miles (708 km).
This aircraft was shipped and certified in November of last year, and began commercial operations on the 11th of the same month, making 145 flights.
Alaska Airlines, the FAA, and the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the accident.
The airline announced that it would temporarily suspend operations of 65 of its 737 Max models, including the one in the accident, and conduct inspections on all of its aircraft.
The 737 Max is a model whose flights were suspended worldwide for 20 months after two crashes in 2018 and 2019 killed a total of 346 people.
The FAA completely banned the operation of this type of aircraft in March 2019, but lifted the ban in November 2020.
Last month, an international airline discovered a case of a missing or loose screw in the rudder system of the 737 Max during a routine inspection, and Boeing requested inspections from airlines around the world.
Boeing said in a statement: “We are aware of the incident involving Alaska Airlines Flight 1282. We are working to gather more information and our technical team is standing by to assist with the investigation.”
