Guadalajara, Jal. With an investment of just over 30 million pesos and around 50 thousand doses, Jalisco will begin vaccinating vulnerable groups against Covid-19 starting January 16, the state government announced.
Next week, registration will begin for the vulnerable population, to whom the Spikevax vaccine from the Moderna laboratory will be applied, which immunizes against the strains in circulation, said Governor Enrique Alfaro.
The president affirmed that Jalisco is the first entity in the country to launch a campaign to vaccinate against Covid-19, although he avoided specifying that it will only be for 0.58 percent of its population.
The 50 thousand doses can only be applied to 0.58 percent of the state’s total population of 8.6 million inhabitants, so that amount will not even be able to cover the entire vulnerable population.
The vaccination campaign is specifically aimed at older adults in assisted living homes, nursing homes or in bedridden; minors in foster care or who suffer from cancer; people with active or remitted cancer living with HIV, post-transplant or with chronic kidney disease; people with severe neuromuscular disease and indigenous population with immunosuppressive disease.
Bárbara Casillas, coordinator of the Social Development cabinet, at a press conference said that it was decided to buy the vaccine from the Moderna laboratory since its application reactivates the “memory immunity” acquired by having received previous doses or by having become ill with the virus, which “reduces the likelihood of serious illness or death.”
In December 2020, Governor Enrique Alfaro signed, together with the “federalist alliance” (made up of opposition governors), a letter addressed to President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, urging him to allow the federal entities to purchase the vaccines directly. without the need to “centralize” as the federal government was doing.
“There are human lives at risk. We must unite in the purpose of saving them. It is not worth taking advantage of people’s anguish and despair,” the claim said.
A month later, in January 2021, Alfaro promised that 500,000 vaccines against Covid-19 would be acquired “immediately,” in a strategy supposedly in conjunction with the private initiative and the state’s business sector, which It never happened.
This Friday, the Jalisco ruler from the Citizen Movement party pointed out that although the national vaccination strategy is developed under the application of the Sputnik and Abdala vaccines, in Jalisco they will not be applied because “they are not recognized internationally by the health”, although he said that the population interested in being vaccinated with these immunizers can go to the IMSS.
