Dutch Rivers and Lakes Facing High Water Levels, Minimal Flooding Risk – Update Jan 6, 2024

Jan 6, 2024 at 12:33 Update: 21 minutes ago

The water in Dutch rivers and lakes is still high. The water level will rise further in some places, but expectations are favorable. Little rain is expected and water can be drained from the IJsselmeer.

“The systems are full, but not so full that water safety is at risk,” a spokesperson for Rijkswaterstaat told NU.nl. “The whole system can handle it.”

The water in the Maas has already reached its peak near Maastricht. Now the water flows via the river towards Rotterdam. This may cause some local flooding before the water disappears into the sea.

The Rhine has yet to peak, but the water level will probably not be higher than around Christmas. Then the Rhine peaked at about 14.50 meters at Lobith. “The expectation now is that it will be somewhere around 14.35.”

The water levels in the Rhine influence tributaries such as the IJssel. Deventer takes into account that the water level in the IJssel can cause flooding on the quay on Monday. Before New Year’s Eve, sandbags and big bags have already been placed on the lowest parts of the quay.

Risk of flooding around Markermeer

The water eventually ends up in the Markermeer and the IJsselmeer. As a result, the water level there will continue to rise in the coming days, while the water is already high.

According to Rijkswaterstaat, it will be possible to discharge water from the IJsselmeer. “The Markermeer is only possible if the water in the IJsselmeer is lower.”

Additional flooding is possible, especially around the Markermeer. This is because the wind may blow harder and the wind will turn towards the east. Wind force 5 to 6 is expected on Saturday evening. This can push up the water towards places such as Hoorn and Edam-Volendam. “This may cause problems outside the dykes.”

Yet the Rijkswaterstaat spokesperson is generally positive. “Everyone is alert. But as far as I can see now, it will not lead to any major problems. Only some nuisance.”
