Jakarta –
United States (US) Defense Minister Lloyd Austin has been hospitalized since earlier this week due to complications from a medical procedure. This news was conveyed directly by the Pentagon, Friday (5/1/2023).
Pentagon Press Secretary Major General Pat Ryder, said Austin was admitted to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on the evening of January 1 due to complications following an elective medical procedure. However, he did not provide further details regarding the complications experienced by Austin or how long the US Defense Minister was hospitalized.
“He is recovering well and hopes to be able to resume his full duties today,” said Ryder, quoted by Channel News Asia, Saturday (6/1/2023).
Austin’s admission to hospital occurred at a time of high tension in the Middle East regarding the Israel-Hamas war. Meanwhile, Iran-backed forces in Yemen attacked ships and other forces in Iraq and Syria attacked US troops with rockets and drones.
On Thursday (4/1/2024), the US launched an attack that killed an Iranian-allied commander in Baghdad. He was accused of involvement in attacks on American troops, angering the Iraqi government.
“At all times, the deputy secretary of defense is ready to act and exercise ministerial authority, if necessary,” Ryder continued, without saying whether that was necessary.
