The suspect was arrested on suspicion of breaking into the home of a man in his 70s in Wajima City, Ishikawa Prefecture, at around 8:40 a.m. on the same day, and stealing six boxes of high-quality mandarin oranges (worth 3,000 yen) from the kitchen.
According to prefectural police, the man’s house was partially destroyed by the earthquake, and he was not home. When the suspect, Matsuoka, who was not usually seen by residents in the neighborhood, came out of the man’s house, he was apprehended and handed over to police officers who had come to rescue him. At the time of his arrest, Matsuoka had approximately 500 yen in cash.
According to the prefectural police, after the earthquake, there were more than a dozen reports of burglaries and consultations within the jurisdiction of Suzu Police Station, Wajima Police Station, Nanao Police Station, and Hakui Police Station.
