Tesla’s Recall of 1.6 Million Cars in China for Software Update and Safety Risks

Tesla intends to recall 1.6 million cars in China for a software update that carries “safety risks,” in a severe blow to the American manufacturer, which has been overtaken by its Chinese competitor, BYD, in sales of electric cars.

The Chinese Market Regulatory Authority said yesterday that this recall aims to correct defects in the software for driving assistance systems, as well as in the car door lock systems.

The procedure concerns two batches of cars produced between 2014 and 2023, and includes a total of 1.6 million Model S cars.

This manufacturing defect “increases the risk of collision with the vehicle and poses a safety issue,” according to estimates by the Chinese regulatory authority. Last December, Tesla recalled two million cars in the United States due to a risk related to its driving assistance system.

China is the most important market for the brand, as it has a factory in Shanghai, which is the largest outside the United States. Tesla produced more than 900,000 cars at its Chinese factory in 2023, according to the New China News Agency (Xinhua).

Tesla faces fierce competition in China, the largest car market in the world, where it competes with a large number of local brands that are introducing their innovations in the field of electric vehicles. The most dangerous competitor to Tesla in this field is BYD.

BYD snatched the lead in electric car sales in the world from Tesla in the last quarter of 2023.
