Winter Health: Dr. Jamal Shaaban Discusses Heart Attack Risk and Prevention

There is a very serious health problem that occurs more often in the winter, according to Dr. Jamal Shaaban, former dean of the National Heart Institute.

Shaaban said that the serious health problem he meant was a “heart attack,” explaining that the reason for it occurring in the winter is due to the effect of the cold weather on the body’s circulatory system.

He added that the cold weather causes constriction of blood vessels, high blood pressure, accelerated heartbeat, and activation of the sympathetic nervous system, which increases the risk of clots, and then a heart attack.

Shaaban pointed out that it is easy to maintain heart health in winter, by following some guidelines, the most important of which are:

– Avoid direct exposure to cold air.

– Do not go suddenly from a warm place to a cold place.

– Wear several layers of clothing to warm the body.

– Cover the head, neck and ears before leaving the house in cold weather.

– Drink plenty of water a day, not less than 2 litres.

– Drink some drinks, such as ginger tea and coffee, without sweetening them with sugar.

– Avoid overheating.

He concluded his speech by emphasizing the necessity of going to the doctor immediately when experiencing chest pain in the winter, explaining that most people believe that it is caused by colds and influenza, but it usually heralds a heart attack.
