Kautokeino Breaks Cold Records with Temperatures Plummeting to Minus 50 Degrees

The official gauge of the Meteorological Institute stopped at 43.5 degrees, but at home in the valleys outside the city center it was even colder.

In Avzi, the temperature gauge of farmer Jon Evald Hætta showed minus 49.7 degrees, reports VG.

– Now it’s not cold outside, but bitterly cold, says Hætta (45) to VG.

The daily newspaper writes that former Kautokeino mayor Johan Vasara registered an even colder measurement. He has shared a photo on social media which shows that minus 50 was measured.

– And then the electric car refused to start. Walk home from work, he writes.

The official cold record in Kautokeino is 50.3 minus degrees. In Norway, the cold record is 51.4 minus degrees from Karasjok in 1886. Only temperatures measured at official weather stations are taken into account. In 1998, for example, 55 minus degrees were measured on an unofficial gauge.
