Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever Spike in Kapuas Hulu, West Kalimantan – Urgent Health Warning

The Health, Population Control and Family Planning Service of Kapuas Hulu, West Kalimantan appealed to residents in the district to be aware of a spike in cases of dengue hemorrhagic fever (DBD) following the discovery of five cases in the first week of 2024.

“There are five cases of dengue fever, two of whom are being treated in hospital,” said the Head of the Disease Prevention and Court Division at the Kapuas Hulu Health, Population Control and Family Planning Service, Kastono, to ANTARA in Putussibau Kapuas Hulu, Friday.

He said that the five dengue fever cases were spread across two people in Semitau District, one person in Bunut Hilir, one in North Putussibau and one in Embaloh Hilir.

According to him, we need to watch out for dengue cases so that there is no spike in early 2024.

Kastono compared the spike in dengue fever throughout 2023, totaling 563 cases with two people dying from dengue fever.

The two people who died from dengue fever in 2023 came from Bunut Hulu District, a 3 year old child and a 4 year old child in Seberuang District.

“Of course we don’t want dengue fever cases in early January to spread, so we need cooperation from all parties in anticipating them, especially public awareness of the environment and a clean and healthy lifestyle,” he said.

He said that to overcome the problem of dengue fever, it is not enough just to fumigate or fog by health workers, but also the role of the community in caring about environmental cleanliness.

In residential areas, people should not allow rubbish to cause stagnant water, because it could be a place for mosquitoes to breed.

Therefore, he continued, the public is asked to implement 3M plus, namely draining water reservoirs, closing water reservoirs, recycling various items that have the potential to become mosquito breeding grounds. Temples of the Egyptians which carries the dengue virus in humans.

“The most important thing is that if a family member or child has a high fever, they must immediately be taken to the nearest health service for medical treatment and blood checks,” he said.
