The French supermarket chain Carrefour will stop selling products of the American company PepsiCo, such as Pepsi and 7up drinks or Lay’s chips, because it considers them too expensive. The chain announced that it will stop restocking PepsiCo products as of Thursday. It added that it would post a notice in its French branches that it was no longer selling the products due to “unacceptable price increases”.

Carrefour’s decision is the latest chapter in ongoing disputes between retailers and major food manufacturers over high prices, according to Reuters and the Financial Times.
“Talks with PepsiCo were, to be fair, difficult. We want to reduce prices this year in line with global trends, but PepsiCo is demanding price increases instead,” a source from the Carrefour chain told the Financial Times.

Customers welcome the decision
In some Paris supermarkets of Carrefour, announcements about stopping the sale of PepsiCo products have already appeared, and customers mostly reacted favorably to the measure, Reuters wrote.
“It doesn’t surprise me at all,” said one of the customers. “I think there will be a lot of products left on the shelves because they’re already too expensive and they’re things we don’t need to buy,” she added.
Carrefour is among the retailers most active in putting pressure on big food and consumer goods producers over prices, according to Reuters. Last year, for example, it began placing warnings on products that had decreased in size but increased in price.
