2024 Strategic Trends: Multipolarity, Arms Race, Climate Change – Trends Center Study

Abu Dhabi: “The Gulf”

The Trends Center for Research and Consultation issued a study entitled “Strategic Trends in 2024,” during which it reviewed the most important strategic trends that crystallized or took root in the previous year, and anticipated their future in the new year.

The study prepared by the Strategic Affairs Department at Trends indicated that one of the most prominent of these trends is the trend toward multipolarity in the international system, with the continued relative decline of the United States of America, and the increasing role of emerging countries, such as China, Russia, India, and the Gulf states.

She pointed to the increase in the size and level of international conflict, and even the framing of attempts at international integration within the framework of competition between the Global South and the Global North, and to give legitimacy and normalization to the involvement of regions, or entities below the national level in global politics, such as the European Union, the United States of America, and the African Union.

The study stated that among the most prominent “strategic trends in 2024” are the growing arms race, especially in the field of nuclear and conventional weapons, the increasing intensity of competition over artificial intelligence, and the return of the phenomenon of the hunt for Africa, with the increasing interest of major countries in the region, especially in light of the global food crisis. The normalization of the phenomenon of the extreme right, and the escalation of its influence in many countries.

The study showed that the sources of the global threat witnessed an increase in the urgency of the climate change crisis, a growth in cyber attacks, an escalation in nuclear threats, and a development in international terrorism strategies.

The study indicated that these trends indicate the return of security and strategic issues to the top of the international policy agenda.
