But who is the mysterious sender hiding behind the name of Yves Gallinace, residing in Cour la Basse, and who sent Michel Sabatéry, a local historian from the commune of Bessan (Hérault), a metal rooster stolen in 1999 from the top of a mission cross located in one of the streets of the village? The public prosecutor of Béziers, Raphaël Balland, knows this but public action for theft being time-barred, only the year of birth of the thief found was revealed: 1975.
The theft – or the prank, it was April 1 – was carried out by this man aged 25 at the time, “for fun, during an alcoholic festive evening”, reports the magistrate. “Subsequently, he did not dare to return it, until recently, after having rediscovered this object hidden in his cellar. »
For his part, the mayor of Bessan, Stéphane Pépin-Bonet, while waiting to recover the bird, salutes the work and tenacity of justice. He also reveals some of the underlying facts of the investigation carried out by the Florensac gendarmes, reporting that it is thanks to the comparison made with the date appearing on the Clermont-l’Hérault postmark and the video surveillance films that the identity of the thief was able to be established, the latter having paid for his postal shipment with his bank card.
A quarter of a century later, the gallinaceous will find its place as a weather vane at the top of the Bessan cross. “We will restore it if necessary,” adds the elected official. And we will take care to secure it well so that it does not fly away again. »
