The attack in Iran that killed 84 people on Wednesday was the work of Islamic State (IS). The terrorist organization reported this on Telegram on Thursday.
According to the latest figures from the Iranian emergency services, 248 people have been injured in addition to the deaths. Several injured people are in critical condition. The death toll could therefore still rise.
The two explosions took place during a ceremony commemorating top commander Qassem Soleimani, who was killed in a US attack in 2020. The bombs went off in the cemetery where Soleimani is buried.
Soleimani was a high-ranking figure in the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps. He was specially charged with covert operations and missions abroad, such as in Iraq and Syria.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s top leader, has vowed a “firm response” to the bombing. Mohammad Mokhber, Iran’s first vice president, has also promised revenge. He has said that “Soleimani’s soldiers will bring them a very strong retaliation.”
