Sweden Defeats Czech Republic 5:2 to Become First Finalists in World Cup U20 Hockey

Hockey players from home Sweden became the first finalists of the World Cup for under-20 players. In Thursday’s semi-final in Gothenburg, they defeated the Czech Republic 5:2, when they decided their triumph with three goals in the third period. The second finalist will emerge from the second semi-final USA – Finland (from 19.00 h).

The Czechs had a better start to the match, taking the lead in the 7th minute with a goal by Melovský. The Swedes equalized five minutes later, when defender Lidstein’s shot fell through goalkeeper Hrabal’s trap. At the beginning of the second period, the Swedes created pressure and Sandin-Pellikka shot past Hrabal – 2:1. It was only in the 26th minute that the referees ruled out for the first time and Cibulka punished Willander’s game with a high stick – 2:2.

The Swedes also scored during their first power play, which they only got to in the 45th minute. Defender Lekkerimäki sent them into the lead for the third time in the match, who was followed up six minutes later by Östlund, who escaped the Czech defense after an excellent pass by Lidstein and made it 4:2 with the escape. The Czechs did not avoid mistakes in their attempt to reverse the score, and Lekkerimäki made it 5:2 in the 54th minute. Even the game of the Czech team with six skaters did not change the result. Slovakian Oto Durmis was one of the referees of the duel.
