Two leaders in one of the factions allied with Iran were killed on Thursday, as a result of a drone bombing that targeted a building belonging to the Popular Mobilization Forces, east of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad.
Al-Hurra’s correspondent explained that the bombing targeted the “logistical support building of the PMF, located within the complex of the Ministry of Interior building,” explaining that the initial toll of victims indicated “the killing of two leaders” from the faction.
Security sources told Al-Hurra that “the targeting targeted the 12th Brigade of the so-called Al-Nujaba Movement (listed on the US terrorist lists), which is in charge of managing the logistical operations command in the PMF, and resulted in the killing of two leaders, including one of the most prominent leaders and the military official of the pro-Iranian movement, known as Abu Taqwa.” .
The sources added that the bombing resulted in 6 others being injured, one of whom was the Popular Mobilization Forces intelligence official.
In an official statement, Iraq condemned the attack and considered it a “blatant attack and blatant violation” of its sovereignty and security, adding that it was an act no different from “terrorist acts by targeting a security headquarters.”
The media spokesman for the Iraqi Prime Minister, Yahya Rasool, said in a statement that the incident is “totally rejected,” and the Iraqi Armed Forces “hold the international coalition forces responsible for this unprovoked attack on an Iraqi security body operating in accordance with the powers granted to it by the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.” “This undermines all understandings between the Iraqi armed forces and the international coalition forces.”
Rasoul continued: “We consider this targeting a dangerous escalation and assault on Iraq, far from the spirit and letter of the mandate and the work for which the international coalition was created in Iraq.”
For its part, Reuters reported, citing security and police sources, that “at least two fighters from a faction allied with Iran were killed, and five others were wounded, in a drone attack that targeted the faction’s headquarters in eastern Baghdad.”
The sources explained that they have no information yet about who is behind the attack.
For its part, Agence France-Presse reported that the number of wounded reached 7 people.
Washington has so far counted more than 115 attacks against its forces in Iraq and Syria since October 17, that is, 10 days after the outbreak of the war in Gaza, according to a tally reported by an American military official, who preferred to remain anonymous to Agence France-Presse.
The “Islamic Resistance in Iraq”, which includes armed factions allied with Iran and linked to the Popular Mobilization Forces, claimed responsibility for most of these attacks.
These factions object to American support for Israel in its war against Hamas, which launched an unprecedented attack on Israel on October 7.
Washington responded more than once to the attacks by these factions, by bombing its sites in Iraq and sites linked to Iran in Syria.
Washington deploys 2,500 military personnel in Iraq and about 900 in Syria, as part of the fight against ISIS within the international coalition established in 2014.
