This time we invited musician and actor David Kraus to the Morning Club. With Miloš Pokorný, they discussed not only music and the Roma band with which he is currently touring the world, but also his father Jan Krause’s talk show and parenting.
I always let the boys go on stage first
You have a new unique music project…
It’s a pretty hot project, because the spirited Roma music plays a big role in it. We started working on it even before covid. I started the band Gipsy Brothers. I was still singing somewhere, until one day they approached me to sing with them and to my surprise the Roma musicians liked it. So we started playing and singing together. We even started the Khamoro festival, which is one of the biggest Roma festivals in the world.
Roma musicians don’t just let anyone join them. Why do you think you fell for them?
I guess we can always come up with something new together. Roma musicians don’t like it when concerts are always performed with the same one. They get tired of it quickly.
Is it true that the Roma band doesn’t rehearse?
It always takes some preparation. It is also a kind of calming. But we have to train, sometimes twice as much, because we are a bunch of dyslexics.
And aren’t the audience surprised when you arrive somewhere and see you together with a Roma band?
People are always shocked. How many times do we go to cities where they have problems with the Roma community. And we are the Band-Aid that came to solve the situation. But I always let the guys go on stage first to play without me. And it works. I am happy when Roma and non-Roma audiences appear in the audience.

Andy Cermak: My music works better abroad, what I do here is also important

I found that it works without me
You also sang in the Jan Kraus Show. Why did you leave after years?
The big turning point occurred during covid. No singing, tests, vaccinations, people wearing masks. This was very uncomfortable for me and I just said enough was enough. I didn’t want to be where I couldn’t sing. So I stopped going to the show, eventually due to other issues as well. I found that it works without me. And that there is no point in going back there.
How hard was it to tell your boss, especially if he’s your dad, that while it was great, enough was enough?
I wrote him a letter. So that he can read it several times, with and without emotion. Letters are written in our family and I recommend it to everyone. Dad accepted it normally. We made a deal.
So he didn’t mind?
My dad has been doing the show for eighteen years. He is a phenomenon. I admire him for that. But when there is music in such shows, the ratings go down. The show is about talking and I was just kind of taking a bathroom break.

New music is recycled
What do you enjoy most about music?
I always thought of you as a music specialist. I agreed with you on many points. It seems to me that the new songs are rather recycled. I’d rather dig into older music than new music. But I try to listen to new music on the radio, on iTunes or Spotify to stay up to date.
So are you listening to us too?
You play what they don’t play anywhere else. But I know everything you play. I know The Weeknd, I hear influences from the eighties, Prince and Michael Jackson. But at the same time, it is something new and minimalistic. Today’s youth enjoy it. But now I’m most moved by The Rolling Stones’ new record.
What do you think of her?
I don’t know if artificial intelligence did it all, but I just like it. She is energetic, concise. Probably one of the best records they ever made. No sentiment and whining.

A lot has changed with the birth of my daughter
In March 2021, you became a father for the first time. How has your family changed you at all?
My favorite time is with my family, it is the most precious time for me. We had a lot of fun during covid. I’m the kind of dad who can be alone with his little girl. And when he says goodbye to his mother, there is no noisy scene. On the other hand, sometimes it’s too much, and when I’m with my family, I’m not able to do anything else at all. That makes me grumpy sometimes.
Did your priorities change after the birth of your daughter?
I have always been a proud person. When I promised myself that I didn’t like something or didn’t want to do it, I didn’t do it. I lived for myself. After I became a father, I sometimes take something that I wouldn’t have taken ten years ago, because I plan on going on vacation with my family, for example.
How is it going in the Roma band with which he currently sings? And how is it possible that some members are known overseas? What has changed for him during the covid pandemic?
You will learn this in the player at the beginning of the article. You can find the archive of all Morning Club interviews in the Podcasts section, in the Expres FM application and in your favorite podcast service.
