The war in Ukraine is intensifying. On Tuesday, Russia carried out a massive attack against several Ukrainian cities. Close to 99 rockets and cruise missiles of various types rained down on civilian targets. A large number of drones were also put into use. The attack came a few days after an almost equally powerful rocket attack.

According to CNN Russia is said to have fired more than 500 missiles and drones in the course of five days around the New Year’s weekend.

Ukraine’s chief of defense, Valery Zaluzhny, refers to the attacks as the largest of their kind against Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. Dozens of Ukrainians were killed, and close to 200 wounded.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy claims Russia used almost every weapon in its arsenal, including S-300 anti-aircraft missiles, which can also be used against ground targets.

The violent attacks have caused alarm bells to ring in several Western countries. NATO has reacted strongly, ordering four F-16s into the air to monitor NATO’s eastern flank more closely. This also happened as a result of Russian rockets probably using Polish airspace during the attack.

Video: Should show the shooting down of Russian missiles

– We should respond in a language that Putin understands

– We should respond to the latest attack on Ukraine in a language that Putin understands, by tightening sanctions so that he cannot make new weapons with smuggled components and by providing Kiev with long-range missiles that will enable it to take out launch sites and command centers, writes Poland’s foreign minister, Radoslaw Sikorski, on X.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has long urged the West to provide Ukraine with more powerful and longer-range weapons. But the wish has so far not been fulfilled due to Western fears of an escalation of the conflict. Russia’s massive offensive may be lowering the threshold for giving Ukraine what it needs to defend itself against Russian aggression.

“Preparation for Long War”

According to Institute for the study of war Russia is probably in the process of using more long-range missiles, including cruise missiles. This is interpreted as “preparation for a long war”.

According to the British Ministry of Defence, Russia has used a “significant proportion” of its newly produced long-range missile stockpile after several days of fierce attacks in Ukraine.

“It suggests that Russia envisages a long-term campaign, and is not aiming for a quick victory.”

The attacks cost Russia ten billion kroner

Military analyst Anders Puck Nielsen at the Defense Academy in Copenhagen interprets the latest Russian attacks as a signal that the war is now moving into a new phase.

– They have saved up for several months to be able to do this now, says the military analyst in Danish TV2. He believes there will be more similar attacks throughout the winter.

He believes that Russia is now trying to find new ways through the Ukrainian air defense. Before the attack on January 2, Russia allegedly hacked private surveillance cameras in Kiev to find out how the Ukrainian air defense functioned and where in the city these are located.

According to Forbes the last two major airstrikes are said to have cost the Russians about ten billion Norwegian kroner in total.

– I find it difficult to see that they achieve any military gains from this that can justify the costs, says Anders Puck Nielsen.
