Shanghai, January 4, 2024 (Xinhua) – Tesla’s Shanghai factory, the American automaker’s first large factory outside the United States, will deliver 947,000 cars in 2023, the company said on Wednesday in its report on production and deliveries for the past year.
The company said that the number represented a 33 percent increase over the previous year, adding that more than half of the 1.8 million electric cars that Tesla delivered globally during the past year came from the Shanghai factory.
Tesla’s Shanghai factory is estimated to produce one car in less than 40 seconds, as the localization rate of car components used in the factory exceeded 95 percent. During 2023, Tesla’s huge Shanghai factory delivered more than 600,000 electric cars to the Chinese market.
The Shanghai factory has developed into Tesla’s main export center worldwide. “China has been constantly working to improve its level of openness in recent years, and Tesla is both a witness and a beneficiary,” said Tao Lin, vice president of Tesla, adding that China’s openness policy, advanced development concepts and good business environment have created tremendous opportunities for companies and that the Chinese market is “necessary.” To develop Tesla.
Tesla has continued to accelerate investment in Shanghai in recent years. During late last December, the company officially launched its new huge factory project capable of producing 10,000 megapacks annually. Construction of the new project is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of this year and production will begin in the fourth quarter.
