A US court has documents released which lists the names of people associated with the late businessman and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. It also mentions former President Bill Clinton and Britain’s Prince Andrew.
The documents come from a 2015 civil lawsuit that centered on allegations against Ghislaine Maxwell. She is seen as Epstein’s right hand. The businessman was suspected of sex trafficking of underage girls and conspiracy, but was never convicted because he was found dead in his cell in New York in 2019. Maxwell was convicted. She received a 20-year prison sentence for involvement in Epstein’s sexual abuse.
A mention in the documents does not mean that a person was actually an active part of Epstein’s abuse network, but only that that person was named in the civil lawsuit.
943 pages
A total of 943 pages of documents were released today. This includes interrogations with witnesses. Names of victims or alleged victims are painted black, but the names of most people mentioned are legible.
The judge who ordered the release of the documents tempered expectations in advance by saying that the media had already managed to find out most of the names that had first been blackened or anonymized and that many people who were named had no objection to the release their name.
Great interest
Yet interest is high: immediately after the documents were released, the site on which they were located crashed. Although journalists are still sifting through the documents, the BBC although Bill Clinton appears in it, as expected. He flew on the businessman’s private jet several times on humanitarian trips to Africa. Clinton then praised Epstein as a committed philanthropist, but later claims to have severed ties with him.
Britain’s Prince Andrew also appears in the documents. A woman says the prince groped one of her breasts on the couch of Epstein’s New York apartment in 2001. This statement was previously released and Buckingham Palace denies it. Andrew was a friend of Epstein. He reached a settlement in the US in 2022 with Virginia Giuffre, who also accused him of sexual abuse. Ghislaine Maxwell allegedly forced her to endure the abuse.
