Additional measures are being taken against high water in various places in the country. Sandbags have been placed in Aldeboarn (Friesland), Volendam and Hoorn to protect houses. Various mills and pumping stations are running at full speed to pump out water.

Being in Hoorn today two hundred sandbags placed on Fisherman’s Island, the municipality’s artificial peninsula. Residents were there again on Tuesday evening confronted with high water almost reaching residential homes. Residents then laid down sandbags themselves to protect their homes. The peak of the high tide is expected tomorrow or the day after tomorrow.

Sandbags have been placed in several places in the North Holland city:

This afternoon, 1,200 sandbags were laid down in Aldeboarn over a length of 240 meters. The water in the River Boarn is almost up to the brim, writes Omrop Fryslân.

Pumping stations are running at full speed to pump out the water. The Woudagemaal in Lemmer has also been open again since yesterday. Four locks in the De Lege Wâlden area near Joure have been closed. An additional pump has also been used to pump water out of this area.

The water board still has fourteen Frisian polders that can be used as water storage. It will be decided tomorrow whether they will be deployed. That would provide space for seven million cubic meters of water.

Polder mill

Polder mill Eolus near Den Ham has been running daily since the end of October to maintain the polder. Excess water is thus drained from the Fransumerpolder towards the Aduarderdiep.

“This doesn’t happen that often,” says miller Rob Hoving RTV North. “There is also a pumping station on this polder, but it just can’t handle it. That’s why I’m helping with the mill. For us as millers, this is just fun. The mill is working well and I think it’s great.”

In Megen (North Brabant), the Aa en Maas water board is working on removing a large badger sett in the Maasdijk. The animal has dug a tunnel of about ten meters. This is risky because of the high water. Because of the holes, the dike can be damaged or even collapse if water hits it.

“It’s not just Megen that has a problem. The water then flows from here to Den Bosch,” says dike manager Sjaak Daverveld. Broadcasting Brabant.

A cemetery in Eindhoven will be closed in the coming days due to flooding. The rainwater can no longer flow away from the cemetery in the Woensel district. There is also a lot of water at other cemeteries in the city, the municipality warns. Some paths are difficult to pass.

Maas

Part of a dike has been damaged in Maastricht. This causes the water to flow into the Maas at an accelerated pace. Several houseboats have been evacuated.

The Limburg Water Board has taken various measures. For example, the valves under the barriers are closed. Normally these pipes provide drainage for streams that flow to the Meuse. By closing the valves, water from the Meuse is prevented from flowing back into the streams and causing nuisance.

To get the water from the streams that flow to the Maas there, pumps have been placed in various places. The dikes have been additionally inspected, but no abnormalities have been revealed. According to current measurements from Rijkswaterstaat, the highest level in the Maas near Maastricht is expected tomorrow morning at 10 a.m.
