Massimo Boldi didn’t expect that «when I reached the end of my career I would have difficulty making a film, the film I would like at least. For the rest I’m happy: the relationship with my daughters and grandchildren is extraordinary, I have a beautiful family.”
To Corriere della Sera the comedian and director as well as producer talks about his relationship with Christian De Sica: «We are friends, anyone who says we argued is lying, we are on excellent terms, we just took different paths. We had proposed a film to Paolo Virzì entitled “Died from Laughing”, the protagonists die, but Christian and I would still be able to make people laugh…». At the cinema then «I brought the classic bauscia to the screen, Christian was my counterpart in Rome. Everything came from observing people, from what he did in life. I have always imitated existing characters.”

Boldi, the beginnings
Like many others, the beginnings were difficult for him too. Before starting «I did many jobs, including salesman at Buondì Motta. I worked for the Trappini agency that made the attempted sale, I scoured the province of Varese, bars, restaurants, drugstores. I went in and asked: “Do you need it”? They paid in cash and in the evening we did the accounts.”
And if he wasn’t able to sell «we ended up having coffee and milk with Buondì for dinner at my house. We didn’t have a penny, after my father’s death I was the one who had to provide for my mother and brothers.” Before making people laugh, she did several jobs, including window dressing. Massimo went to school in the morning and in the afternoon he attended school in via Duccio da Boninsegna: «I left at dawn and returned home at 10pm. As an exam test they made me decorate the windows of Galtrucco, the historic Milanese fabric shop . It’s something that has remained with me: the way of touching the fabric, placing it in a certain way.”
Jerry Calà: «What a fear for the heart attack, but for me life is still fun. Drugs? I tried cocaine”
The relationship with Pozzetto
Massimo Boldi lost his father when he was young but he hasn’t lost his desire to make people laugh, to be a yuppie for life. And not even playing. «I grew up in the Ticinese area of Milan, where I started forming the first musical groups, the Shadows and the Apache, with my friends. We played guitar and drums.” The turning point, he tells Corsera, came suddenly «Thanks to Renato Pozzetto, a brother to me. Without him I wouldn’t have done this profession: we met in 1968 at the Derby Club, the temple of cabaret. In 1974 he took me to Canzonissima.”
A nicer person than Massimo Boldi? Yes, it exists. “Silvio Berlusconi. Unattainable.” Why did he cheat on him? «Bettino Craxi had introduced us to me by saying: “It will be your luck”. And so it was: we immediately liked each other. In 1986 I ran away from Fininvest to make Fantastico with Adriano Celentano: they sued me, I lost and they sentenced me to pay 2 and a half billion. When I returned, Berlusconi forgave me: “You owe me 2 billion and 500 thousand laughs”.
TV ratings report cards, tops and flops: Rai 1 beats (slightly) Canale 5. Alberto Angela, how charming, “Io noi e Gaber” excellent, Forrest Gump guaranteed
Cult characters and actresses
The character most loved by his audience is undoubtedly Max Cipollino: «He is my mask. He was born in the 80s, when I did four hours of live broadcast with Teo Teocoli on Antenna 3 Lombardia, with the lines “I know, I know… I didn’t know but I know”. He was an adult who remained a child, people loved him for this.”
And “Now I’ll have my pussy?”? It was born «in “Christmas Vacation 1995”: in the final scene Luke Perry appears and takes away my daughter Cristiana Capotondi. They dance together, he tells her to come away… I chase them, the elevator closes in front of me and… “Now I’ll suck it”».
The most beautiful woman you met on set? «I acted with Cindy Crawford and Bo Derek, but the most beautiful was Ornella Muti».
Private life
Today Massimo Boldi is a single man «I was widowed 20 years ago and I had some important loves. One of them cheated on me with my best friend. I always wondered why they didn’t tell me. Instead I found out by following her: she ended up badly, I stuck her with my hands in the cookie jar.”
Another disappointment. The missed Ambrogino d’Oro. «I wasn’t disappointed, but it’s as if in Rome they hadn’t given a citizen’s merit to Alberto Sordi. It seems strange to me, that’s all.” Prize ended up in the hands of Pucci. «Yes indeed. But I’m happy for him, who among other things has a veneration for me.” His heir? «It’s not Pucci!».
