The world’s most prolific smartphone maker is leaning on artificial intelligence as the key to more sales this year. Samsung announced that it plans to launch its new device on January 17 in San Jose, California, and it will likely be called “Galaxy S24” during a live broadcast event.
The teaser for the launch of the new phone includes only that “artificial intelligence for the Galaxy is coming.”
In past years, Samsung and its fellow phone makers have relied on improvements in camera technology and flexible displays to stand out, but 2024 promises to be the year in which additional AI capabilities take center stage.
More than a billion smartphones with built-in AI are expected to be shipped by the end of 2027, according to Counterpoint Research estimates.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Dall-E tools, which generate text or visual responses to user queries, are at the forefront of the wave of generative AI sweeping the technology industry. It helped make NVIDIA a trillion-dollar company by providing key training accelerators for artificial intelligence. The next step in developing the technology is to integrate it into devices, as promoted by the American chip manufacturer Qualcomm last year.
“Samsung” and “Qualcomm” lead the market
“Samsung and Qualcomm are the direct leaders,” Counterpoint Research researchers wrote in December. Their current product offerings and capabilities place them at the forefront of market movers. Similar to what it did with foldable devices, Samsung is likely to account for about 50% of the share over the next two years, followed by major Chinese OEMs such as Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo, and Honor.
