Breakthrough: Nano-Drones Target and Eliminate Cancer Cells, Study Shows

1/2/2024-|Last update: 1/2/202406:16 PM (Mecca time)

A research team has succeeded in developing “nano-drones” capable of selectively targeting and eliminating cancer cells, providing a potential solution to stubborn types of cancer.

Nanoparticles are very small devices, usually 1 to 100 nanometers in size, and can be made of various materials, such as plastic, metal, or carbon. They are smaller than red blood cells, and can easily travel through the blood and tissues (a nanometer is a unit of measurement). The length is equal to one billionth of a metre.

The study was conducted by researchers led by Professor Sipyeong Kang and Professor Sung Ho Park at the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) in South Korea, and was conducted on mice, and the Eurick Alert website wrote about it.

Innate lymphocytes, known as natural killer (NK) cells, play a vital role in the body’s immune response against cancer, and many efforts have been made to harness the power of NK cells to develop effective cancer treatments.

Natural killer cells are a type of white blood cell that patrol the body looking for tumors and cells infected by viruses.

Nanoplanes

The research team designed and manufactured nanoplanes that interact with natural killer cells in a way that facilitated their attack on cancer cells and enabled them to effectively eliminate targeted cancer cells in the laboratory.

This pioneering study presents a new approach through the use of nanoparticles, offering huge potential for selective treatment of previously intractable cancers.

Professor Kang Si-pyeong expressed his happiness with the study, saying, “This research offers new possibilities for immunotherapy through nano-drones to deliver natural killer cells to attack cancer cells, overcoming challenges such as natural killer cell movement and survival. We aim to provide new opportunities for personalized treatments that selectively treat cancer cells.” different types of cancer through further research, including induction of cancer-specific immune cells.”
