iOS 17.2.1 Update Causes iPhone Network Connection Issues: Fixes and Solutions

A week after releasing iOS 17.3 beta 1 to developers, Apple has released iOS 17.2.1 to iPhone users to fix a fast battery drain issue. Despite the rarity of the company releasing an update so close to the end of the year, users were looking for improvements in the battery life of their iPhones.

However, what should have been a smooth update turned into a nightmare for some users. iOS 17.2.1 appears to cause an issue where iPhones can no longer connect to network providers.

According to reports in an Apple Community Forum thread (via ZDNet), several users indicated that after installing iOS 17.2.1, a bug prevented them from connecting to their network providers.

One user described: “I use T-Mobile. I spoke to support and took the phone to the store. They replaced the SIM twice, first with an eSim and then with a new SIM card. No VPN profile installed. Still, no IP on personal hotspot. Only intermittent internet. Most of the time, I get a message asking for cellular data activation, even with 4 bars of 5Guc.”

Another user mentioned that his daughter faces the same problem: “My daughter is going through this right now. There is something in this latest update causing this. We went to the Apple Store, followed some procedures, told her to download the new iOS update again, it worked for about 5 hours before returning to the same problem.”

Although Apple has not officially acknowledged the problem, there are some possible solutions to the bug in iOS 17.2.1 that prevents connection to the cellular network.

  • Delete Any VPN Profile: Some users claim that deleting VPN profiles solves the problem on the cellular network. Go to Settings, General, VPN and Device Management, VPN, tap the “i” in VPN profiles and delete the VPN.
  • Reset Network Settings: Go to Settings, tap General, Transfer or Reset iPhone, Reset, and tap Reset Network Settings.
  • Restore iPhone: Follow the steps above, but choose to erase everything instead of resetting just the network settings (be careful with backups, this option will restore your iPhone to factory settings).
  • Update to iOS 17.3 beta: Since this beta was released before iOS 17.2.1, it can help prevent the bug if the other options don’t work. Installing the public beta profile is simple, and we’ve provided instructions previously.

If none of these solutions help, you may need to wait until Apple releases iOS 17.2.2 or iOS 17.3 in early 2024.
