Two days after the serious explosions in the Anna Maria Horalaan in Midwolda (Groningen), the devastation is still great. Several houses are boarded up and the street is littered with glass. “It is almost a miracle that there were no casualties or deaths,” says Mayor Cora-Yfke Sikkema, who visited residents of the street today.

Something probably went wrong in one of the houses in the street. Several large explosions took place there just after 1 a.m. These were probably caused by a launching device for illegal fireworks, a kind of catapult. Seven houses and several cars were damaged. The windows of at least five homes were shattered. Several people were also slightly injured by flying glass.

“Now you can see in daylight how much damage there is. You notice that it is affecting people. They are shocked and also angry,” says Sikkema against RTV Noord. “You shouldn’t show this off, especially not in a residential area.”

Fireworks remains are still in the street:

The damaged houses have roofs broken and window frames sagging. Most houses are owned by a Groningen housing association. He will have all damage repaired in the near future.

Declaration

Wendy Kanon lives a street away and was shocked by the loud bangs, she told RTV Noord. Kanon is an informal caregiver for an elderly man who lives in the street where the explosions took place. “All the windows were out, both front and back. He was sitting close to a window and had glass all over him. There was a cut here and there. Fortunately, he was calm.”

Five people in the street reported the vandalism. The police informed the broadcaster that no arrests have yet been made.
