Cases of the JN.1 strain of the Covid-19 virus have increased in recent months.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the new mutant has become the most common strain of the virus spreading throughout the United States.

Furthermore, JN.1 cases are also on the rise in the UK, as well as China and India.

While it is not currently clear whether JN.1 infection produces different symptoms than other variants, the CDC explained that “the types and severity of symptoms typically depend more on a person’s immunity and health.”

However, evidence shows that people report slightly different symptoms of Covid.

The latest data issued by the Office of National Statistics in the United Kingdom indicates that the most common symptoms among those infected with the JN.1 coronavirus variant include the following, according to the British Express newspaper:

Runny nose (31.1 percent)
Cough (22.9 percent)
Headaches (20.1 percent)
Weakness or fatigue (19.6 percent)
Muscle pain (15.8 percent)
Sore throat (13.2 percent)
Difficulty sleeping (10.8 percent)
Anxiety (10.5%).

While symptoms, including a runny nose and cough, have been around since 2020, the list includes some new signs, such as difficulty sleeping and anxiety.

Interestingly, loss of taste and smell – previously a tell-tale sign of the virus – is now only reported by 2 to 3 percent of those infected in the UK.

The sudden rise in JN.1 cases suggests that this variant is either more spreadable or better at evading immunity.

JN.1 has a distinct L455S mutation in its spike protein as well as three other mutations in non-spike proteins.

Previous research has shown that acquiring the L455F mutation is associated with increased viral transmissibility and immune evasion ability. Furthermore, new research has warned that JN.1 has the potential to become a dominant variant worldwide.

However, the good news is that the strain does not appear to be more dangerous than other variants circulating, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention added: “At this time, there is no evidence that JN.1 poses an increased health risk compared to other variants currently circulating.” .
