Kerala Government Launches K-Smart Software to Combat Corruption and Improve Service Accessibility

While inaugurating the K-Smart software in Kochi, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had expressed his desire that the government wants corruption to be gone, not just to reduce it. Not only the Chief Minister but everyone who wants to get government services without delay must agree with the Chief Minister in this regard. If any service can be obtained from government offices through modern technology without bribes or middlemen, there can be no greater advantage. The government has started a system where all the services to be obtained through the local institutions can be obtained online at once. The government claims that it is the first time in the country to start testing this. We do not know the exact situation in other states. Or even elsewhere, for Keralites, if the services of the government offices, which people depend on the most, are available at home, then they should be happy. Because many services are currently available with so much pain and suffering.

The Chief Minister exhorted the officials not to expect handouts from people when they come seeking services. He must know what is going on in many government offices and he is mature enough to give such advice. Not only now, but since the government systems have come into existence, corruption and bribery have been part of the government service. There are many offices where there is a need to please the officials if the service is to be provided quickly. Revenue offices are one of those that people have to rely on the most. It is hoped that this situation will change once K-Smart becomes fully functional. There is a practice in many offices of keeping the public with lame excuses for days. Sometimes insufficient information is left out in the application. This can be remedied if the defects in the application can be pointed out and corrected in the first meeting itself. It is a common practice in most organizations not to adequately inform applicants. It can be said that the administration is running efficiently when it is able to provide services as soon as possible to those who come in search of them.

The unprecedented development of information technology has made any service available anywhere in the world at the fingertips. Any service of local bodies of the state can be accessed anywhere through K-Smart software. Even expatriates can get them from their residence abroad without coming to the country. Acquiring various building permits is a daunting task for many. It is also the area where bribery is the most prevalent. There are even people here who are tired of going to and fro with the local authorities for permission and finally commit suicide. There has also been an incident where the office was set on fire in protest against the village office staff who were engaged in taking care of the property. All this is being carried out.

Landing a government job these days is harder than winning the lottery. Those who are lucky enough to get into such a position through hard work should try to show mercy to the public and provide service without difficulty. Those who consider a government job as a license to ride on people should always remember the good words of the Chief Minister.
