SEOUL, KOMPAS.TV – The South Korean Armed Forces reportedly held artillery live fire training and mechanized unit maneuver training, Tuesday (2/1/2024). This military exercise was held after North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un broadcast threatening statements to South Korea and the United States (US).
This exercise was held near the North Korean-South Korean border, involving the Mechanized Infantry Division and the 2nd Rapid Reaction Division of the South Korean Armed Forces. This exercise also uses key South Korean military defense equipment such as the K9 self-propelled howitzer and K2 tanks.
The South Korean Armed Forces reported that this exercise involved various scenarios, including artillery provocations which had to be responded to by retaliatory artillery fire at the source of the provocation, enemy command positions, and enemy troops.

The exercise also involved Apache attack helicopter units providing air support for ground troops conducting suppression maneuvers.
“At the beginning of the new year and in the midst of an alarming security situation, this exercise was held to uphold a strong combat posture at all times and reinforce strong response and punishment in the event of enemy provocation,” the South Korean Armed Forces said in a statement. Yonhap.
Previously, when attending a meeting with North Korea’s ruling party, Kim Jong-un emphasized that his military should not hesitate to “annihilate” the US and South Korea if provoked.
Kim Jong-un’s aggressive rhetoric is seen as reflecting North Korea’s plans to further develop nuclear weapons and hold more weapons tests, including intercontinental ballistic missiles that can reach the US mainland.
For 2024, Kim Jong-un also stated that his party was ready to launch a new spy satellite, produce nuclear material and develop attack drones.
