Turkey has decided not to let through minesweepers from Great Britain to Ukraine through the Dardanelles, reports RBC-Ukraineciting the Directorate of Communications of the Anti-Disinformation Center of the Republic of Turkey.
“Claims in some media that minesweepers donated to Ukraine by Great Britain have been given permission to pass through Turkish straits in the Black Sea are false,” the statement said.
It is noted that Turkey immediately classified Russia’s “special military operation” against Ukraine as a “war” and, in accordance with Article 19 of the Montreux Straits Convention, closed the straits to warships of the warring parties (Russia and Ukraine).
Turkey will not allow the passage of minesweepers until the war in Ukraine ends
“Turkey, which has impartially and diligently implemented the Montreux Convention since 1936, has maintained its steadfast determination and principled position throughout this war to prevent the escalation of tensions in the Black Sea,” the Center wrote.
They added that their allies had been duly informed that mine-hunting vessels donated to Ukraine by the UK would not be able to pass through Turkish straits in the Black Sea while the war continued.
Earlier it was reported that the British Ministry of Defense confirmed the transfer of two minesweepers to Ukraine for demining by the Royal Navy.
Two Sandown Mine Sweepers (MCMV) are being transferred from the Royal Navy to the Ukrainian Armed Forces to strengthen Ukraine’s maritime capabilities.
“Strengthening the maritime capabilities of the Ukrainian armed forces, particularly countering the threat of Russian sea mines, will help restore Ukraine’s maritime exports,” Defense Minister Grant Shapps said.
