Düsseldorf (dpa/lnw) – Learn a rare language, cook Israeli or play the harmonica? The adult education centers (VHS) in North Rhine-Westphalia will again have a wide range of courses on offer in 2024. The VHS Siegen and Bonn offer beginners’ courses in Quechua, a language of the Andean region. Anyone interested can learn Albanian in Cologne.
In the health sector, there will be more offers on the subject of resilience due to a state-funded project, said Simone Kaucher, spokeswoman for the VHS regional association of North Rhine-Westphalia. This involves, for example, strengthening resilience or dealing with difficult life circumstances. In general, relaxation and exercise courses are still in high demand.
As early as 2023, there was increased interest in the topics of finance, investments and energy saving. That’s why the VHS also has many offers in its program for 2024, as Kaucher said. The hype surrounding new technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) is also reflected in the course offerings.
According to Kaucher, long-running favorites are creative offerings such as painting, drawing or handicrafts, but also instrumental courses. The current trend is the blues harp, a specific type of harmonica, which is comparatively easy to learn. Corresponding courses are available, for example, at the VHS in Neuss and Dortmund.
Beginner courses in Ukrainian, led by immigrant native speakers, are increasingly being offered. According to the VHS Hagen course description, it is about “an introduction to the Ukrainian language for everyone who is in contact with Ukrainians and aims to communicate in the national language.” The language courses are often linked to regional information.
There are around 130 adult education centers in North Rhine-Westphalia. In 2022, around 660,000 people took part in the 65,000 offers.
