The post-Christmas period and January in general bring another big harvest for traders. The sales season is starting. The word understandably evokes its original meaning, when stores actually got rid of older goods at very low prices in order to stock up on new ones and offer them again at standard amounts.
Discounts are virtual only
At least in the Czech Republic, however, the concept of a sale has become extremely empty. The more you see all kinds of advertisements, posters and billboards that attract discounts of up to 90%, the less discounted goods you actually buy. The truth is that the Czechs have already stopped reacting to the minus 30% mark, because they think it’s not enough. They prefer to go where goods are promised almost for free, but they don’t realize that they are still paying too high a price for them.
“Sales are starting in the Czech Republic. You can buy the goods at the same price as before Christmas, only a 30% discount is added, because from 21.12. this item was ridiculously overpriced,” said Markéta Vyvlekková on the X social network. And she added her experience from Poland, where it works completely differently. Sort of normal.
“Real sales have started in Polish stores. Christmas goods are discounted by 30 to 70%,” added the customer. It alludes to a fact that has been practiced here for years. The price of goods increased significantly before Christmas so that they could be cheaper anyway. And after the holidays, it is then possible to make even bigger “discounts”.

Nobody wants this anymore
Although the Czech Trade Inspection already prohibits similar practices and claims that it also affects them, many customers do not seem to have any effect. One thing is certain: even if there are sales, you won’t buy anything cheap in the Czech Republic, and it doesn’t matter if it’s a boutique or a large online store. They all use the same practices.
Real sales have started in Polish stores 🇵🇱. Christmas goods are discounted by 30 to 70%.
Sales are also starting in the Czech Republic 🇨🇿. You can buy the goods at the same price as before Christmas, only a 30% discount is added, because from 21.12. this product was absurdly overpriced.
And this is how we live here😵💫

“I’ve been ignoring Czech events and sales for a long time. Not only is it not cheaper, but it’s usually completely unsellable pieces that sit there for months. Unfortunately, my mother only notices the number on the Discount sign,” commented one of the discussants on the topic.

It is becoming more and more evident that we will not get rid of high prices in Czech stores just like that. It probably won’t be possible without massive controls, enforcement of cartels and overall more regulation, including in the field of discounts.
