A 39-year-old man died on Monday during a New Year’s dive in Dieppe on the northern French coast, the local newspaper reported. Paris-Normandy. The man was dragged by the rough sea to within 400 meters of the beach.
The accident happened on Monday around 12:15 p.m. While most people were already back on the beach after their dive, the man was still in the sea.
“I saw him. His back was turned to the sea and he was waving to his loved ones,” a witness told the newspaper. “Then he was hit by a wave and he fell.”
Two other swimmers managed to get the man out of the water with the help of a boat. Back on the beach, the man suffered cardiac arrest, according to the local newspaper. The rescue services were unable to revive him.
The accident took place in full view of the many spectators who came to cheer on the swimmers. The weather conditions were very bad, including strong winds. Nevertheless, the rescue association that had to monitor safety estimated that the dive could take place.
