At 9 pm and midnight local time on December 31, 2023, the Sydney Harbor Bridge and Opera House in Australia were brightly lit and music sounded to welcome the arrival of 2024, kicking off the 9-minute and 12-minute fireworks and music celebrations .
As one of the first metropolises in the world to welcome the New Year, Sydney brilliantly presented New Year’s blessings through two 21-minute fireworks shows, Aboriginal smoke ceremonies, artificial intelligence-driven projections of the Harbor Bridge bridgehead and illuminated ships on the water.
The “Calling Country” program at 9:00 pm on December 31, 2023 local time has the theme of celebrating Australian Aboriginal culture and tells how each generation inherits the stories of Aboriginal people. Iconic Australian Aboriginal figures are projected onto the bridgehead of the Sydney Harbor Bridge.
The midnight fireworks display is launched from six water platforms, five city building rooftops, four floating bridges, the Harbor Bridge and the Opera House. More than 8.5 tons of fireworks were launched from 18,000 points, accompanied by silver and gold fireworks to mark the 50th anniversary of the opera house.
Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore said Sydney’s New Year celebrations were one of the most spectacular annual events on earth. This fireworks event highlights the city’s best attributes: its glorious harbour, its delightful lifestyle and its love of celebration. She estimated more than a million people watched the fireworks near Sydney’s waterfront.
That night, Ms. Zhu Jingjun, Director of the Australian Jinwen Art Museum, and Zeng Yi, Executive Chairman of the Australia-China Economic, Trade and Cultural Exchange Promotion Association, delivered speeches in Sydney to wish their motherland more prosperity in the new year.
